The State of Mobile Development and Testing

It’s no secret that the mobile app industry is bursting at the seams.

Even so, it would be lazy of us to assume that all the hullabaloo around mobile is legitimate without researching the topic ourselves. In an effort to nail down some hard statistics in an industry that has been overtaken by intoxicating buzz, we conducted a survey of more than 1,000 developers and testers throughout last three months of 2013.

The infographic below features SmartBear’s original data, which highlights just how prevalent the demand for high quality mobile apps really is.

I seriously doubt that mobile application development now constitutes about 30% of the total development. I think the batch of people you interviewed for these numbers should have been bigger, much bigger. A thousand person is far from enough.

This is like saying 1 in every 3 developers nowadays is a mobile developer, which isn’t a very logical number.

Sorry, itoctopus, but I whole-heartedly disagree that our sample size was too small. Considering the estimates of how many developers there are in the US (or even the world), 1,000+ responses for an industry survey is roughly double the number that would make this survey statistically significant.

It’s always good to be skeptical, but we do stand by our data.

      Hey itoctopus,

At the rate that people are consuming mobile apps and from all those I’ve talked to in the industry, 1 in 3 seems conservative to me. Of course that doesn’t mean that every mobile developer isn’t developing for other platforms, such as, desktop and Web.
