New Gartner APM Report Findings: Big Surprises?

User-Experience-Bigger-Than-Data

Gartner just published an interesting new report written by Federica De Silva, and Jonah Kowall entitled  “Growth and Criticality of APM Shift Innovation Toward Agile Vendors”.  (As always, we were happy to see SmartBear in the report as a leading vendor to watch!)

The key findings include:

  • Traditional APM  solutions lack the ability to deal with increasing complex distributed applications
  • Solutions/tools  are fragmented
  • Applications are increasingly important to business and need to account for business data.
  • New innovative vendors  are breaking into market and appealing to users outside of the traditional Ops users

These key findings didn’t come as much of a surprise to us as many are directly aligned with the same problems we have been working to solve at SmartBear with our new AlertSite UXM platform (though it’s always encouraging to see we have been placing our bets wisely all this time!) However, what was surprising to us in this report were a couple of things that seemed to contradict one another— one being the inclusion of Splunk in the vendor list for APM, with the other being that the #1 recommendation was that APM offerings need to focus on the end user experience.

Splunk, which plays in the big data space by mining machine data, doesn’t seem to me to be a straight line for improving application performance or putting user experience front and center.

Like New Relic, Splunk is a prime example of a vendor that is all about Data, which means they are heading for broad analytics capabilities.  Don’t get me wrong, data and analytics are awesome, and absolutely critical, but I think what we really need right now is a lot more pragmatic and a lot less ivory tower. I mean, let’s not lose sight of the picture here—it’s all about the people, people!  If your approach to APM starts in the data and works back to the end-user, you are simply approaching the problem completely backwards. Sorry, dude.

We do things differently at SmartBear. Our objective is to deliver a user-centric, unified solution focused totally on making it easy for an application team to ensure the end user experience (hence why we named our platform AlertSite UXM, as in, User Experience Management.) We are doing this by looking at data from the end user’s perspective and following it back to the code level in order to find, fix and optimize applications where they are most impacting actual users.

Sure, data is big, but user experience will always be bigger.
