137330132

Last week I delivered a Webinar entitled, “How to Implement Code Reviews that Don’t Suck.” I focused my presentation on how to overcome common challenges to getting a successful code review process in place. How to Inherit Somebody Else's Code

tips when you inherit someone elses codeYou’re faced with a daunting upgrade of someone else’s application. How do you get started quickly and with minimal pain? Here’s five guidelines to streamline the process.

Every developer faces a situation wherein an application requires an update—for code the developer didn’t write. For many developers, going to the dentist for a full day’s worth of drilling without anesthesia would be more welcome than working with code of dubious origin and uncertain quality.

It’s not that the other developer purposely created a hard-to-maintain application. It’s that you don’t know the other developer’s thought process in putting the application together, making it difficult for you to figure the code out without some help. This article provides some tips to ease the pain and get you started more quickly.

92374112

No matter the industry, every business deals with the task of allocating resources to the items that have the highest return on investment. Unfortunately, identifying all of the items that have the biggest impact on the bottom line can be a complex task. There is one item, however, that stands out as having a broad impact on many critical elements of every software business: software quality. For successful businesses that develop software, software quality cannot be an exception--it must be the requirement. While customers will obviously prefer quality software products, that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

The Cloud and Older Hardware: Enforced Obsolescence?

enforced obsolesenceOne hidden effect of cloud computing being that it's no longer possible to do what we all used to do: Have an older PC running, say, Windows XP and Office 2000, which was perfectly adequate for our needs. Now the auto-refresh of every cloud app forces us to "upgrade" even if it's too much for our poky older hardware. Unless, that is, you pay attention during your QA process.

One of the touted advantages of cloud computing (especially Software as a Service) is that it removes the need to support older application versions. The IT department doesn't have to worry about keeping end-user software in compliance with security patches or upgrading the business’ computers with commercial applications (such as Microsoft Office) or custom in-house software. Developers appreciate this, too, since with SaaS, nobody issues trouble tickets on the 3-year-old version of the application which users refuse to relinquish.
