Web performance in review: Most popular posts of 2010

While the way we use and access the Web is changing rapidly, one thing that has remained consistent this year is your interest in maximizing the performance and availability of your websites for users.

5. The effect of Web performance on online shopper satisfaction. In this post, we note a correlation between some of Web-based retailers ForeSee Results identified as having the highest online customer satisfaction, with those online retailers that performed above average in our monitors.

4. 5 web errors you never want your customers to see. A quick rundown of some of the Web errors (along with screen shots) you never want your site to experience. These include the HTTP 503 Service Unavailable, DNS error, no response to Web page request, HTTP 500 Internal Server Error, and down for maintenance.

3. Slow website? Five ways to speed it up. In May, we offered you five ideas for increasing the response time of your site. If you haven’t already, try putting blocking JavaScripts at the end of your page; improving load time of key page content; putting style sheets at the top of the page content; minimizing the number of HTTP requests; and deploying Web acceleration hardware.

2. Site speed to affect your Google search results. After nearly a year of speculation, Google confirmed that it would be adding site speed as one of the factors considered when determining Google search results. The move was an attempt by Google to force its customers to improve the overall user experience.

1. Facebook is fastest social network in Q2; Twitter drops to last. Facebook achieved major milestones this year, breaching the 500 million user mark in July. But that didn’t slow its performance. The Zuckerberg brainchild grabbed the crown for the fastest social network in Q2, at 1.02 seconds. That quarter MySpace proved itself the most available network, at 99.98 percent.
