Cyber Turkey Thursday is the real kickoff of the online holiday shopping season. It’s clear so far from the results of our e-commerce website performance monitoring that top retailers have matured operationally to the point that they are ready for the shopping onslaught.
Home pages were remarkable stable across the board last night. Of the 50 top retail sites monitored, only two had notable home page issues on Thursday.
Toys R Us’ website experienced periods of unavailability to approximately half of our tests between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. EST. This brought daily estimates of availability down to 93.5 percent.
Cabela’s also experienced a 15 minute period of timeouts around 6 p.m. EST, bringing daily availability to 98.6 percent.
Here is a quick summary of home page performance, measured by response times, during “Black Thursday.”
Comparing evening performance (9 p.m. to midnight EST) to all day performance on Thursday only shows less than a 7 percent increase. Using Akamai’s retail index as a benchmark, which showed peak page views of approximately 2 billion per minute around 10 p.m. EST yesterday and their retail consumption indicator reporting 100 percent above normal, the performance data is a robust statement of online retail readiness.
Stay tuned for additional updates throughout the coming week.
