We know that for a lot of teams, Excel spreadsheets are still the go-to method for managing software tests.
Spreadsheets are simple to use and can be easily shared and update by everyone involved in the testing process.
We’ve talked to hundreds of SmartBear customers who currently use spreadsheets to manage test cases, or who began with spreadsheets before making the switch to a test management tool.
We continue to be impressed by the different ways organizations have been able to turn a simple spreadsheet into a valuable tool for managing their tests.

Announcing the SmartBear Test Management Spreadsheet Competition!
Are you currently using a spreadsheet to manage your tests?
Do you have a template that you find really helpful for organizing your test cases, defects, or requirements? If so, see how it compares to what your peers are using, and maybe even win $1000.
How it works:
Until February 29, enter to win SmartBear’s Test Management Spreadsheet Competition. We’re giving away one $1,000 grand prize to the person who submits the most comprehensive and user-friendly spreadsheet, as judged by our internal panel of experts. Once the contest is over, we will pull together ideas from the best submissions in order to create our new test management spreadsheet, and share it with the world in the following weeks.
Here are a few details to keep in mind as you get started:
- No data is necessary — if you feel like including a few lines of sample data, that’s perfectly okay, but not required.
- Be sure to not only include defects, requirements and/or test cases, but any other metrics you use on a frequent basis.
- Submissions must be made in .xlsx or .csv format.
- Have fun, and don’t forget to delete any sensitive information before submitting.
To enter, submit your spreadsheet via email to email@example.com by February 29th, 2016.
The winner will be announced the following week, and notified via email.
